Psalms 77:19
Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.
This passage reminds us that though the people of Israel could not see God, he led them by the hand of Moses and Aaron to and through the Red Sea to their salvation. God continues to lead us, though we cannot see him.
I grew up in the hills of West Virginia, far from the ocean. I grew to love dark forests and the bright glow of autumn leaves. But God has led me to spend nearly all of my adulthood close to the sea.
I have learned to love the rhythm of the sea and the way it calms my spirit when I have the time to go to the seashore for a visit. These pictures remind me of many of those visits. I hope you enjoy them.
Sitting on the beach at dusk
Sitting on the beach in those moments between day and night can be captivating. It’s a time when I can let my mind float on the waves of my imagination and take me to places I never knew I wanted to go.
Watching the sunset by the pier
It’s a good time to stand on the beach rather than on the pier. The people on the pier walk back and forth, barely noticing the wonder before them. But on the beach, there is nothing to steal your attention away. You can drink in the sunset in all its glory with no one to disturb you.
Seeing the sun through the fog by the sea
There is a stillness and softness to fog. It makes everything feel different, otherworldly. The sun will eventually chase away the fog, but I will always remember the world the fog created and how it touched me.
Seeing the ocean from high up on a hill
I remember long ago I spent time on an island in the middle of the sea. Sometimes I would sit in the grass at the top of a high cliff and look out on the endless ocean. Eventually, I would wander down to the seaside with my snorkeling gear and walk into the sea to explore its secrets. I would lose all track of time there. It was wonderful.
Watching the waves roll in
One of the things that my wife and I love to do is go to our favorite beach to watch the waves roll in. This beach is our favorite because the waves are always strong and active. No matter how far back we stay on the beach, the waves seem to always try to reach us. Occasionally they do, to our great joy.
